The American Shaolin Center (ASC) offers advanced
training and instruction in American Shaolin, a
contemporary approach to the martial arts and core
fitness that includes Functional Martial Arts and Core
Strength Training. The Functional Martial Arts utilized
at ASC is a "mixed" martial art approach that
incorporates traditional Shaolin Gongfu (Kung Fu) and
contemporary knowledge of human biomechanics to maximize
effectiveness and to prevent chronic bodily degeneration
in our students. All major systems of study, 1)
wushu
(striking
& kicking), 2) qinna
(joint
locking & throwing), 3) shuai
jiao (grappling) and
4) strategy
(conflict
resolution) comprise American Shaolin. We utilize Hard
Qigong for Core Strength Training.
Jim Eubanks, chief instructor of ASC, studied under his
late teacher, Ryugen Fisher (Shi Shen Long), until his
unexpected passing in 2006. Ryugen was a long-time
martial artist, special forces soldier and law
enforcement officer, and expert in Shaolin Gongfu (Five
Animals; Hung Gar), Kenpo, Taiji (Tai Chi) and Yoga. Jim
has a BA in philosophy, specializing in comparative
studies (Asian Studies) from Furman University, and has
performed thesis work under the direction of David E.
Shaner, PhD. Shaner Sensei is 7th dan in Ki-Aikido and
chief instructor of the Eastern Ki Federation (EKF), and
now advises Jim as his formal teacher since the passing
of Ryugen Sensei.
Jim is currently completing an MS in Sports Science and
Rehabilitation and DC in Chiropractic Medicine from Logan
University in St. Louis, MO. He has a particular interest
in the "functional" approaches to health and wellness as
they relate to the martial arts and core conditioning.
